John wins on a competitive night

Our meeting on Thursday 18th January was a closely fought affair. We were joined by Cyrus, a new addition to the club, who proved to be an able opponent in all of his matches. We had a turn out of six and played an all play all tournament with two rounds of five point matches and three rounds of three point matches.

John, Phil and Eric all finished on three wins. The first tie break (match points difference) saw John and Eric still tied. John won the head to head against Eric (second tie break) so won the night. Kevin, James and Cyrus all finished on two wins.

Things were so tight that I had accidently declared Eric as the winner (mistake on my scores sheet omiting an important asterix!).

With the liklihood of bigger attendances (several "new" players showing an interest and intention to come along), I propose that our default club night tournament should be a knock-out tournament (rather than all play all) with 3 point matches in the earlier rounds.

We'll see how it goes on Thursday with the introduction of another extra club tournament as well - more of that in next blog entry!
